چکیده

We study the phase behavior of solutions consisting of positive and negative ions of valence z to which a third ionic species of valence Z > z is added. Using a discretized Debye-Hückel theory, we analyze the phase behavior of such systems for different values of the ratio Z̄ ≡ Z/z. We find, for Z̄ > 1.934, a three-phase coexistence region and, for Z̄ > 2, a closed (reentrant) coexistence loop at high temperatures. We characterize the behavior of these ternary ionic mixtures as function of charge asymmetry and temperature, and show the complete phase diagrams for the experimentally relevant cases of Z̄ = 2 and Z̄ = 3, corresponding to addition of divalent and trivalent ions to monovalent ionic fluids, respectively. n the previous 2 chapters, we developed the fundamental thermodynamic relationships and saw how they are applied to geochemical problems. The tools now in our thermodynamic toolbox are sufficient to deal with most of the phenomena we will encounter in the second half of this book. They are not sufficient, however, to deal with all geochemical problems. In this chapter, will add a final few ther...

Optimization of a cubic equation of state and van der Waals mixing rules for modeling the phase behavior of complex mixtures

A thermodynamic modeling for the vapor–liquid equilibrium of binary systems of supercritical fluids and ionic liquids is presented. The van der Waals mixing rules and a cubic equation of state are used to evaluate the fugacity coefficient on the systems. Then, a particle swarm algorithm was used to minimize the difference between calculated and experimental bubble pressure, and calculate the in...

A green synthesis of functionalized thiazol-2(3H)-imine via a three-component tandem reaction in ionic liquid media

In this research, an efficient synthesis toward 2-(2-((4-Methoxybenzoyl)imino)-4-(4-methoxyphenyl)thiazol-3(2H)-yl)-2-phenylacetic acid via a three-component tandem reaction using aroylisothiocyanate, phenyl glycine, and 4-methoxyphenacyl bromide in an ionic liquid (IL) has been described. 1-Methyl-3-pentylimidazolium bromide (IL) has been employed as a recyclable green solvent. Performance Simulation of Ionic Liquid and Hydrofluorocarbon Working Fluids for an Absorption Refrigeration System

The theoretical performance of ionic-liquid(IL-) based working fluids in an absorption refrigeration system was investigated. The IL 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([bmim][PF6]) and five hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) were selected as the absorbent and refrigerant, respectively. The Redlich−Kwong equation of state and two-phase pressure-drop model were used to compute the thermodyna...

Phase Behavior of Dipolar Fluids and Ion–dipole Mixtures, and Surface Diffusion of Adsorbed Polymers by Won Ki Roh

Dipole moments are ubiquitous in nature. Studying dipole moments is the first step toward understanding phase behavior of various colloids with strong dipole moments. Since the Dipolar Hard Sphere fluid (DHS) is the simplest model described by dipolar interactions, studying this model is fundamentally important for understanding the structures and thermodynamics of polar fluids. A variety of un...
